The controls use the units stated in their labels. Changing a value resets the current trial so comparisons use consistent initial conditions. Pause preserves the model state. While paused, Advance one frame advances it by one fixed time step (one generation for Life), and Play continues the animation. Views that depend only on parameters do not move as time advances. Rendering is separate from experiment time: resizing the window does not alter the physics. These finite, simplified teaching models show the stated assumptions, rather than predicting every property of a real experimental apparatus.
